If you’re like me, you are one of those types of people who take recycling and green living seriously. That is why I have come to talk to you about the many benefits of composting.
If you’ve never heard of composting, it is basically a way for you to make your own soil from the leaves that fall down in your yard and the kitchen scraps you would normally throw away or put in the insinkerator. For those with a large plot of land such as farmland they may even use manure in big quantities around their field.
The end result is the same, just in different quantities.
Composting is a great way to recycle and it shows responsibility towards the earth. How much you do it depends on how much you want to compost and how much space you have available to you at your home.
For large spaces you can build your own compost pit or compost bin. Building a compost pit is mainly consisting of digging a pit around 3×4 in the ground for the compost to be placed inside. You can then put some wood planks down around the side for some extra insulation, then cover the top with a waterproof tarp or similar heavy- duty cover.
If you don’t want to dig a hole in the ground for whatever reasons you have, you can try to build your own. It is possible to make a simple one just by building a box with some wooden planks. There are no exact guidelines except that you usually want to put a cover over your compost bin.
Aeration is necessary for the compost to cure properly so you can drill small holes along the sides of your bin, but make sure they are not so exposed that moisture and rainwater can get in.
The third option is to simply buy a cheap compost bin, they come in all different shapes and sizes so it is very hard not to be able to find one that suits your needs. From worm bins to eco-tumblers that turn by themselves, to large stock bins with multi chambers, the composting industry actually caters very well to the unique demands of many home composters.
Even if you don’t have a backyard it is still possible to compost with these bins if you purchase the smaller ones, there are some models which can fit neatly inside of your kitchen and they are designed quite beautifully so they won’t be an eyesore sitting on the countertop or on the floor next to the bin.
Cheap compost bins are a great and convenient way for you on the path to a ‘green’ home.
