Today more than ever it is important to look forward to the future with green living in mind. If we don’t start to take care of our planet fifty years from now we will be wishing we had. It is trying to be generous for the next generation. And it starts with each person, and each persons small contribution inside of their backyard or kitchen. It will all build up.
Composting is an effective way to help out. If done correctly it reduces the amount of organic waste by about half.
It also produces great natural nutrient fertilizer which plants and trees love. If you are thinking about starting your own garden, or maybe an avocado nursery, you have got to get in on the composting trend.
As many people have said, compost just happens. Even if a few leaves drop onto the grass and pile up, they start to decompose into ‘compost’. This is why leaves and grass are actually organic compostable matter. What we do is just to help speed along the process a little bit. This results in a few things:
Your lawn or backyard can become neater and easier to manage.
Because composting techniques require you to pile up your organic waste into a compost bin or similar storage unit, the result is that your backyard will be free of stray leaves or branches.
You are helping to reduce landfill waste by composting.
Don’t throw bags of leaves away to be picked up by garbage trucks anymore! Recycle the stuff yourself and feel a part of the responsibility for taking care of mother nature.
You produce something that is worth some money to others.
Did you know you can take your finished compost and sell it to your local gardening store or to your neighbors? Once the compost is complete it is a valuable fertilizing product that many people will PAY money for. All you need to do is put in a little bit of time and effort and sit back and let the compost ‘happen’!
Firstly I recommend building or buying your own cheap compost bins. Decide where you want to place it, are you going to be mostly composting garden waste or do you want to get more complicated and add other things such as kitchen waste. Coffee grounds and fruit peels are great to compost as well.
Make sure the compost is aerated properly as this can speed up the process and also result in higher quality fertilizer. You can achieve this by turning your pile once every few days with a pitchfork or poking it with a compost aerator. Another option is to put the compost into a rolling cheap compost bin or a tumbler bin. These bins help to make the turning or aerating of the stuff a bit easier.
All in all composting is such a great and fun activity that I can’t see why anyone would want to NOT participate in doing!
